Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels: National Roadmaps for a Resilient and Competitive Future

16:30 – 17:30(Istanbul, GMT+3)

At COP28, governments agreed to accelerate the global energy transition by tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling energy efficiency improvements, and transitioning away from fossil fuels (TAFF). Recent geopolitical crises have underscored the risks of fossil fuel dependence and reinforced the importance of expanding affordable renewable energy for competitive economies and resilient societies.

As international efforts on TAFF are gaining momentum through initiatives such as the Global TAFF Roadmap, the Santa Marta Process, and preparations for the Second TAFF Conference, attention is shifting toward the practical question of how countries can translate global energy transition goals into national pathways that reflect their development priorities and economic realities.

This event will provide an open platform for government representatives, international organizations, civil society, private sector and development partners to discuss how international partnerships can provide meaningful support to national TAFF roadmaps and how these roadmaps can support national development priorities, energy security, and economic resilience.

The discussion will focus on:

  • National priorities, opportunities, and challenges in developing TAFF roadmaps

  • Lessons learned from emerging country experiences

  • Integrating TAFF into broader development, energy, and climate strategies

  • International cooperation, financing, and technical support needs

  • Strengthening partnerships ahead of the Second TAFF Conference

Agenda:

  • Opening Remarks (tbc: Dr. Heike Henn, Designate State Secretary, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany)

  • Panel: Country Perspectives on National TAFF Roadmaps

  • Fishbowl Discussion with public, private and civil society stakeholders

  • Closing Remarks (Fentje Jacobsen, WWF-Germany Director Climate and Energy)
