From Global Commitments to National TAFF Pathways: Building Credible Roadmaps Beyond Fossil Fuels

12:00 – 13:00(Istanbul, GMT+3)

The TAFF Conference in Santa Marta this year was a (long overdue) milestone since the global commitment to transition away from fossil fuels during the COP28. Almost 60 countries came together with the same objective. So far, only a few countries announced their national TAFF roadmap including Germany.

The event will look into the TAFF process implementation, pairs concrete country experiences with recommendations and enables cross-country parliamentary dialogue. This side event will examine the current legislative status in Germany - including critically looking at the German TAFF roadmap- , suggesting a long-term perspective and considering how to implement national roadmaps alongside the other 57 countries in the TAFF process.

It also marks the launch of a TAFF Pocket Guide, commissioned by Klima-Allianz in cooperation with the other organising partners.

This event is designed to facilitate dialogue between three constituencies: parliamentarians, researchers and civil society representatives. They all play a role in the TAFF (Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels) process. The parliamentary chapter of the Santa Marta process emphasised that legislators play a key role in translating international commitments into national law and budgets. Thus, the event follows the logic of discussing ways forward, as well as learning from and sharing best practices. Legislative best practices, developed by the Wuppertal Institute (WI), will be shared and discussed with the aim of enriching the national debate in Germany.

The discussion will take up examples from the TAFF Pocket Guide and invite perspectives from the audience.

Agenda:

  • Welcome and Opening Statement (BMUKN representative, tbc: Designate State Secretary Dr. Heike Henn)

  • Introduction to the TAFF-Pocket Guide (Wuppertal Institute)

  • Fishbowl Discussion among parlamentarians and civil-society organisations (facilitation: BUND, Misereor)

  • Closing and Call to Action/ Handover of the Pocket Guide (Klima-Allianz)
